Santa Rosa County Health Department main location

Our mission is to promote and protect the health of all citizens, and we are pleased to provide you with more information on the many ways we serve the community. As you browse our website, please remember that public health is much more than the services we provide at the health department. Public health is influenced by everyone in the community, so it is important that we all work together to make Santa Rosa County a healthier place. Our health department is dedicated to providing the expertise and resources necessary to improve the county's health, but we need your commitment to make a Healthy Santa Rosa!

February is National Children's

Dental Health Month

The American Dental Association's slogan this year is "Rock Your Smile" and their goal is to promote the benefits of good oral health, especially to children. Here are a few tips for good oral health in children:

  1. Take your child to a pediatric dentist by the child's first birthday or when the first teeth arrive, whichever comes first.

  2. Begin helping your child floss by the time their last two molars come together, which usually happens when children are about 2 to 3 years of age.

  3. Help children brush their teeth until they around the ages of 7 to 9 years old or until they can tie their own shoes.

  4. Curb thumb-sucking by approximately age 5 to prevent developmental abnormalities.

  5. Cut down on sugary snacks between meals. "It's the number of times you expose your teeth to the sugars that's important, not how much [sugar]" says pediatric dentist Richard Mungo.
